Prone Hunting: Getting Steady When the Shot Comes Fast

At the range you can take your time. On a hunt, the animal decides when the shot happens. The hunter who gets steady fastest, and still safely, gets the shot. These habits help.

Always identify your target and what is beyond it. Never take a shot you are not sure of.

Know your setup before you leave

Practice getting into prone with your hunting rifle and pack at home or at the range. Know your rifle's dope at the distances you expect. In the field, you want to be thinking about the animal, not your gear.

Pick your spot

Look for flat ground or a slight rise that lets you see over grass and brush. Clear sticks and rocks under your elbows and in front of the muzzle. A few seconds spent here pays off.

Drop in and build from the front

  1. Get down behind the rifle and deploy your bipod, or set the front on your pack.
  2. Bring the stock to your shoulder and settle your body in line behind the rifle.
  3. Rest the toe of the stock on the rear bag and squeeze to bring the crosshairs onto the vital zone.

Every ounce counts on the stalk

Hunters cover miles of terrain before the shot. A heavy rear bag in your pack is weight you feel on every climb, and fatigue shows up in your shooting when it matters. Sling Steady weighs 9.5 oz (Pro) or 6.3 to 6.8 oz (Sport) and replaces that separate bag, so you carry less and arrive at the shot fresher. The lighter the better.

Why the bag belongs on the sling

The usual rear bag is in your pack, which is often on your back or a few feet away. Sling Steady rides on your sling, so when you drop into prone, it is already under the stock. It is built for the shot you didn't plan on.

Range check before the season

Shoot your hunting setup from prone with the bag before opening day, so the position feels familiar when it counts. Helps manage recoil: the SteadyFill bag cushions and holds the stock in place for faster, steadier follow-up shots.

For bolt-action hunting rifles, the Sling Steady Pro 9" is the usual choice. Camo colors are available.
